Happy customers and growing numbers continue to shout success for the businesses in Columbus, Georgia and the residents. Whitewater Express as they have passed a tremendous milestone: they’ve taken over 100,000 customers on the exciting two mile section of the Lower Chattahoochee.
“In our fourth year of operation, we see the popularity of rafting the Chattahoochee growing as the word gets out,” comments Dan Gilbert, owner of Whitewater Express. Folks from Alabama, Florida and Georgia are still learning about the opportunity to experience booming whitewater rapids in a downtown environment brimming with more amenities each season. “We think,” adds Dan, “we’ll be able to count on seeing 50-75,000 rafters annually in the near future.”
The Chattahoochee River river levels are dramatic. Trips run at 4,500, 9,000 and 13,000 cubic feet per second, released from Georgia Power’s upstream hydro dam, respectable flows for any whitewater river trip. That the river runs like this year ’round is particularly impressive!
“Seventy-five percent of the trip is Class II-III,” continues Gilbert, “and includes what we call the ‘Lazy River’ about halfway into the run. Super gentle flow cuts a path through rock, and our guests LOVE to float through on their backs, feet up. They get to see turtles and blue herons and often comment that this is their favorite part of the trip.
