Modifications to the Hartland Diversion Dam on the Gunnison River near Delta, CO are complete. The project connected upper and lower reaches of the Gunnison River watersheds that have been blocked for over one hundred years. MWDG worked closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop an innovative design that enables “threatened” fish species that have been hampered by being poor swimmers. It also allows boats to pass in three distinct, yet hydraulically connected channels, while providing a diversion that is reliable. The design reduced the length of the concept design (submitted by others) by almost 50% thereby reducing the project costs and improving the durability of the structure. Initial testing of the primary fish passage channel indicates that the design velocity and depth requirements are being met. Trout Unlimited will be managing performance testing and tuning of the project over the next few years. Thanks go to many who have contributed to this innovation and success!
