Sacandaga River: Hadley and Lake Luzerne, NY
BOOSTING A RURAL ECONOMY WITH WHITEWATER
Hydropower Flows for a New Attraction – Daily hydropower releases on the Class II Sacandaga River provides a perfect venue for family rafting, and beginning kayaking. McLaughlin Whitewater is adding three new exciting whitewater waves to the recreation mix that will appeal to expert boaters and host competitive whitewater events.
Serving Recreation-Seekers from Canada and Throughout the Northeast – An hour north of Albany, the river is within a day’s drive of over 43 million people, and because of the daily releases, the Sacandaga waves will be one of the few reliable park and play sites in its nine-state region.
Course designer John Anderson believes in this project’s great potential. “The daily 4,000 cfs water releases is a dream come true for whitewater fun. The river in its natural state is almost there for some really great waves, we’ll be able to improve it to get the waves to form.”
It has been a lengthy process but we are very close to having all our permits in place and I remain optimistic that we will secure the funding to complete the final construction phase. When completed, the project will be an incredible asset to not only paddlers throughout the Northeast but an economic boost to the whole region.- John Duncan, Project Founder
Over $1 Million in Economic Activity Projected An economic impact study projects the impact of the Sacandaga Whitewater Park added over $1 million of economic activity each year to the local economy. This will be due mainly from visits by experienced whitewater boaters and whitewater events.
An hour’s drive from Albany, the course will serve a population of 42.7 million people including those as far north as Quebec, east to Providence, Rhode Island, south to mid-New Jersey and west to the Great Lakes.
